Organic chemistry

The objective of this class is to give students basic knowledge of organic chemistry to understand better the modes of action and extraction of medicinal plants as well as structural and metabolic biochemistry of the human body.

Flora Medicina, school of herbalism is recognised by the provincial and federal governments as official education establishments. Our class fees are therefore deductible from your income taxes if you adhere to the specific criterias.

  • Next class starting September 2011 one evening a week

Note : This course is a prerequisite for the professional program in clinical herbalism. This course is also open to all.

General objective

  • Give students basic knowledge of organic chemistry to understand better the modes of action and extraction of medicinal plants as well as structural and metabolic biochemistry of the human body.

Specific objectives

  • Understand the molecular structure of atoms and the links between them to form molecules
  • Understand the word list in organic chemistry
  • Know the functions of different chemical composits (alcohols, aldehides, alcanes, acids, etc)
  • Know basic chemical reactions like esterification

Evaluation

  • Small quizzes every week (classes 2 to 6) : 40%
  • Final exam (class 7) : 60%

Schedule

  • One evening per week : 6:30 to 9:30 pm, day of the week to be determined, for 7 weeks during the spring 2012

The nutrition class is available in French only. The teacher is perfectly bilingual; your questions can be asked and answered in English. You can also do your exams and research projects in English. To follow the class, you need to understand French but not necessarily speak it. If you wish to register but are unsure of your French proficiency, please do not hesitate to contact us. If enough students are interested, we could also offer this class in English.
